In the News: You're not as deviant as you think (yeah, right...)

The New York Post recently profiled a soon-to-be-released book A Billion Wicked Thoughts, which analyzes Google search data to discern sexual proclivities.  The researchers basically argue that categories of fetish thought to be deviant (i.e. rare) among sex therapists are in fact quite common.  The Post's article, linked here, describes the findings in more detail and provides some critique.  I haven't read the book, so I'll reserve comment, but I thought my readers might like the heads up on this study, considering how deviant you all are. ;)

  1. Funny, I think I am pretty "normal" sexually (whatever that means) but I have a friend that thinks I am such a deviant. She however thinks sucking dick is GROSS! Hell, just on that fact alone I am a deviant in her mind.

  2. Yes, deviant does seem to be subjective.

Also, some acts that were considered deviant in the 19th century or the 18th century are quite common and therefore "normal" in today's society.

I am interested to check out this book. Thanks for the notice.

  4. Thanks, Kirsti! Indeed, *deviance* is inherently relative to what you consider *normal*. Oral sex was widely considered a perversion until modern times (and still considered "kinky" up until probably the last 20-30 years).

Thanks, Hedone! Though it's well known that many a 18th and 19th century gentleman were partaking of such deviancies provided by the local brothel, if not at home.

Thanks, Sweets! If you're deviant, then you're in good company.

  6. Thanks, Raven! From what I gather, the main idea in the book is that most people are likewise: we just each have our own mix of spices.

  7. In my opinion 'No Spanko', is ever deviant. The men are more handsome, the women are more beautiful. And both sexes, are certainly highly intelligient. So say I.
